Beethoven Eroica and 8th - Get it!

Just got the new Vanska/Minn. Beethoven disk on BIS: Beethoven 3rd and 8th Symphonies... I don't use language like this lightly:

WOW!

Very tight, very engergetic, played as well or better than ANYTHING I have ever heard played. Those who lean toward the Bruno Walter school for their Beethoven may not be quite as enchanted, and one can always quibble on details here and there, but overall, top-drawer Eroicas like this are hard to come by, and the 8th may be the best realization I've encountered. The recording is fantastically clear, and if I feel a dash more warmth would be welcome, it is only cause this whole thing is so close to "perfection". (Had to listen on headphones first--can't wait to fire it up on the surround sound SACD!)

By the way, the brass are just super: I think even Harry Glantz on modern equipment and recording technology couldn't sound better or more dynamic in this music.

(Nice picture of Manny on the back booklet cover, too (others in the picture? I can't remember...).

Thanks, Rimshot...

... I'm really pleased you like it. I have to agree with you, it's a hell of a recording. I also have to give it up for Vanska and the BIS recording crew. Those guys really seem to know what they're doing. The recording has a lot of pop to it and it was fun cutting the wax for this one. So you know, there's no messing around with the dials once they set the balances. The dynamics are real.

I think the 9th will come out this fall.

Awesome! I love the 4/5 recording, so I'm ordering this one now. You and Bob sound fantastic together. Is he still playing that Blackburn Bb?

We're playing on Schagerl C rotary trumpets at Osmo's request.

I use my Prana C 1-4 S mouthpiece and I'm not sure what Bob used. He's been playing a Laskey of late and I don't recall whether he used that on the recording.

Greetings,

Does anyone know if SACD disks will play on standard CD players?

i think some do - those are usually labeled "hybrid"

Any chance on a boxset being released?

Yeah, Matt, but not until we're done with the project. 1 and 6 are next year and I assume 2 and 7 will be the year thereafter. So, I assume it'll be 4 years before they release a boxed set. Doug will record the 6th as I'll be busy at ITG next year if all goes well.

The BIS discs are Hybrid SACDs, so they contain standard CD tracks as well. Unless played on a really old CD player (and probably even then) they will work fine.

I'll be looking for the discs in the next couple of weeks; can't wait to hear them.

Where is next year's ITG? Sadly, I will not be at this year's convention.
