Berlin Phil/Mahler 5

I've been checking out a recording of the Berlin Phil (recorded 2002, Simon Rattle conducting)...my question is, would it be safe to assume that the trumpet section is using rotary trumpets? From what I've gathered, it seems like that would be the norm, but I ask because they're achieving a timbre I don't usually associate with rotary trumpets (much more brilliant than what I'm used to hearing). Thanks for any input, and happy holidays!

If that recording is the same as the DVD then yes, they're using rotary trumpets, it's a great recording and would highly suggest getting it.

The principal is using a 4 valve rotary C. I think B flat's are the standard over there, so the more brilliant sound is probably due to the smaller horn. Nice ears!

Typically, the principal will play a rotary C and the others will play rotary Bb's. Something about maintaining the sanctity of the brass pyramid.
