![]() | Re: Cadneza's and writeing your own? Just had to do that - I wrote a cadenza for the third part of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. Here's my advice to you - people like to listen to music that they recognize, and can follow. So, a suggestion would be if you were doing a cadenza for the third part of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, take maybe the first line of the FIRST movement and use it to start your cadenza (even though it's for the third movement), and then branch off from there. Here is a case in point - I once saw Brandon Ridenour, Canadian Brass member, perform the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. For his cadenza in the third movement, he worked in part of the HUMMEL trumpet concerto. People listened and recognized it, and that's what really made his cadenza memorable. So, here is how I would create one. I'd take my favorite/most flashy line from anywhere in the piece that you need a cadenza for. Use that, but do it just a little bit differently. Then take your second favorite line or something else you think people would recognize. Find this, and then just randomly experiment ways to get from the first line to the second. Just sit down with a sheet of staff paper and just try stuff out, and when you find something that sounds cool, write it down. Hope that helps.

![]() | Re: Cadneza's and writeing your own? Hi Writing your own cadenza is good fun but quite a challenge. The key thing is to maintain the style of the music. Don't try to be too flashy with it. Identify at least 2 key themes from the movement and use those. A good idea is to look at the harmonic implications in the piano accomp and then give it a twist of your own - a contrast like Maj/min invert the theme etc. Another good tip is use a sequence at some point. The audience can anticipate what comes next (no more than 3 times though) Aim for contasts in dynamics, pitch and speed and most important of all - a thrilling climax and smooth transition back into the accomp part. I spent a whole day on the Cadenza for my new Concerto, but its worth it to get it right. Berst of luck Steve |
