Carnival of Venice... I am scared

Any way so in preclinic for marching band my rank leader handed out level 6 NYSSMA solos for those of us who wanted them. So me and this other kid took Carnival of Venice to look over and i must say... I am scared. This peice is scary. I dont think i shoudl have taken it as I always had trouble with speed, but i guess it will help me out as a player if I can get it down nicely. Any tips?

Re: Carnival of Venice... I am scared

Speaking from personal experience, start out SSSLLLLOOOOOWWWW when you work on the variations. Set the metronome at eighth note = 40 and work up from there. I started on it too early/too fast and wound up developing some funky habits (crushing the 32nds in Var. II, reaching/spreading too much for the low notes in the finale, etc...). If you don't have your multi tonguing stuff down pretty well, Carnival is not the piece to learn it on.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with messing around with it. Look through it, show it to your teacher, and see what he/she thinks. You and your teacher are the best judges of what you can and cannot do. If you think you're up to it, great! If not, don't sweat it; go back to your Arban's, Schlossberg, Clarke, or whatever you use and get yourself to a technical level where you can play Carnival cleanly and then come back to it. The preparation process with be much easier/faster if you have the technical ability first.

Don't be scared!

Edit: I'm assuming that you're playing the Arban's version, correct me if I'm wrong.

Level 6 at NYSSMA is for the best players, and nothing better than this to prove what you are worth.
Are we talking about the Clarke, Staigers or Arban version? In any case JohnP has the ONLY recipe for success - SSSLLLOOOWWW and work up from there.

35 years ago I also did NYSSMA level6 on trumpet - with the Arban version and 2 hours later as a bass/baritone with "the trumpet shall sound". It was a GREAT experience!!!!!

Re: Carnival of Venice... I am scared

Lots of slow practice with metronome is the only way to get this. Though it is actually easier then it looks, look for the patterns, also it isn't really that fast it just has lots of fast notes in it. (for Arban Schwartz is a better example then Wynton imo) The eighth note is only around 80ish

Re: Carnival of Venice... I am scared

Well seeing as I have alot of time and my teacher just retired... I am really jsut looking for something to keep me interested in the trumpet and to fool around with. It is the Arban one. I did the Arutunian last year and got a nice grade on it actually 97/100 A+ which isn't to bad as I thought I did really bad, but my judge was easy on me bc I messed up on like the B scale or wtvr at the end and she was like ahh u obviously know the scale you just did a little mistake so i wont take off.

Any way, this probably wont be my final solo this is just a play piece but I want to treat it as if it where a NYSSMA Solo at least until I find a teacher in my area.

I have performed it many times and to work it up I go slowly.

When I'm having fun, I put on Winton and try to keep up playing along.

Re: Carnival of Venice... I am scared

I just did a level 6 last May, the Legend by Enesco. It was a great experience getting it prepared, and I did well enough to make conference all-state in November/December.

I'm also just starting to learn the Carnival of Venice (I think the Arban's is the only level VI) and it is a great piece of music. Use a metronome and get a good recording. The one I have is of Gerard Schwarz, what a player. Try and play with a really legato style, as things will begin to sound pecky, especially if you're on the cornet. It can be an endurance challenge, so finger through a section directly after or before playing it to give yourself some rest. You'll be able to practice for much longer if you give yourself some short breaks.

It's a great piece, you have plenty of time to prepare it for next May.

Where do you go to school? ESYO?

Zach

Re: Carnival of Venice... I am scared

There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a harmless look at it. When I was just starting out on trumpet, I would look at solos like that and think "WOW, some day, perhaps". That's what's fun about playing trumpet. You wont ever progress without challenging yourself every now and then.

Take it really slow and make sure you are playing all the notes. Don't even worry about how fast it will get. Also, if you have been listening to Wynton's version of it on his Carnival album, I would recommend maybe listening to it once or twice then put it away. Don't get caught up in how he plays it. It might tempt you to try it faster and faster without learning the notes first. That was always my problem, I would listen to the recordings too much and then try and play it like Wynton or whoever (and that was just a disaster - at least in the learning stages)
