Columbus Symphony

The first story below is at least part of the explanation for the second story below.

"Nearly one in 10 Ohioans now receives food stamps, the highest number in the state's history.
Caseloads have almost doubled just since 2001, with 1.1 million residents now collecting benefits, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
Low wages, unemployment and the rising cost of groceries, gasoline and other necessities are to blame for financial hardships facing many Ohio families."
The Columbus Dispatch : Food stamps double since '01

"Nearly broke and still short of solutions, the Columbus Symphony could fold as early as next month, the president of the symphony board says.
Although efforts to save central Ohio's largest arts organization continue behind the scenes, Robert "Buzz" Trafford said the orchestra's demise is possible if additional donations prove elusive."

Re: Columbus Symphony

I played a (BAD) broadway show tour in the hall across the square from the Columbus Symphony for a week, it was almost sold out every night. I heard the orchestra rehearse Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphosis one day, they were great.

I don't think that the problem is money, I think it is marketing/advertising.

What was the price of tickets for your broadway show,
and what was the name of the show?

What was the price of tickets for Columbus Symphony?

I have hot expressed any hatred in this thread.
I simply pointed out that the severe economic downturn in Ohio is at least partly responsible for the severe financial hardship being experienced by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
I lived in Ohio 1986-1992 and I still have in-laws living there who are suffering that economic downturn.

The only "hate" in this thread is the unjustified anger you just posted at me.
If you post more of the same at me I will not respond publicly but I will instead send a message to the Moderator asking him to intervene.

Re: Columbus Symphony

Chase,

I've been following this thread on TH and, as Mr. Clean said very accurately there, the economics of keeping a symphony orchestra alive are very complicated. I doubt that we'll find any new solutions here.

Best,
EC

Re: Columbus Symphony

I don't follow much of anything at TH, but at the end of the day, the bills have to get paid - even the government bills. Less income (from taxes) means less expenditure.

Preventing industry subsidies and tax breaks when going off shore may be a start in preserving American jobs. Another problem is the stock market paying higher dividends for putting people out of work and effectively reducing consumer spending. Sounds pretty STUPID to me. We could end up with a revolution on our hands. There is major need for economic overhaul of the economy. The markets are not sorting themselves out very well and the middle class is shrinking..................

It is happening in Germany too. Several public orchestras have been grouped together and can't get substitutes from outside the group. The subs only get travel money and the assurance that there is a maximum amount of services per month that they will be required to play.

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I sincerely doubt that tickets to a show cost less than tickets to the Symphony.

The Wedding Singer. I can't recommend it.

Edit: Did a little research on ticket prices for ChaseFan:

Columbus Symphony: $18-60

The Wedding Stinker: $22.50-69.50
