CSO 2006-2007 Programming

Chicago Symphony has posted 2006-2007 programs, created by the GM and staff in concert with the slew of guest conductors being engaged. This is one pretty varied and interesting season, I think--maybe Zeus-like MDs controlling the programming isn't the optimal way, after all!

Can't help but note a wealth of heavy-duty brass stuff (surprise) that has me thinking about airline schedules to Chicago. Some of the highlights from the back row perspective...:

Berlioz Symphonie fantastique

Shostakovich Symphony No. 5

Mahler Symphony No. 3 (Bernard Haitink)

Scriabin The Poem of Ecstasy

[one program]
- Kodály Concerto for Orchestra
- Gershwin Piano Concerto
- Lutoslawski Concerto for Orchestra

Mahler Symphony No. 7 (Boulez)

[end of one program]
- Respighi The Fountains of Rome
- Respighi The Pines of Rome[/list]
Stravinsky The Rite of Spring

Strauss Also sprach Zarathustra

Strauss An Alpine Symphony

Rimsky-Korsakov Sheherazade

Copland Symphony No. 3

Verdi Requiem

(Somebody's going to get a workout.)

That's what life in the big league is about. Sometimes the most difficult programs are the one's that have compositions by unknown composers.
We played lots of Michael Torke before he was known..........."Ecstatic Orange." OUCH!

cornetguy is on a distinguished road
Herseth's first couple seasons the CSO was without a music director and he described it as getting 5 years worth of rep in two years. All of the big time conductors of that where invited to play there best tunes and most of them wanted the gig. That could also be some of what is going on too, as part of the music director search. Who are some of the conductors that would tell us a bunch?

It's all up on www.cso.org. Many "young" conductors ( many I admit I am not familiar with), as well as big names. Speaking of new music (Wilmer), quite a bit of it too, as well as more established "modern" stuff, very intelligently woven into the program, or so it struck me.

Neglected to mention a big Wynton thing, oratorio-size apparently, called "All Rise" taking on whole week's program.

I have the Reiner recording of pines and it is...awesome, i might say that herseth gets a little too loud in the soloish part of the last movement, but even then, i didnt know that you could make that much sound and stay on one pitch. The 2nd movt. solo is the one i listen to and is one of the most beautiful things we get to play.
