I agree that this is very interesting. Both are spectacular musicians but Haitink is 77 and Boulez 80.

I wonder what the CSO's long range plan is?

Best,
EC (recorded Mahler #2 with Haitink; a lasting memory)

methinks that they are having the two as care takers so that they can take their time and get a really good fit as md, the orchestra has acted in haste in the past and regretted it. as difficult as it is to get a conductor that is willing to put 14+ weeks with one group plus all the administrative and extra-musical bs that an american md has to deal with and one with the right repitoire, and chemistry with the orchestra. i have some hopes on who i would like to see in that position, wolff, lopez-cobos are near the top of my list along with a couple that are older mauser and dochnanyi sp?) and some that i dont want to see in that position. (will keep those to self)

I'm with you, cornetguy, with the exception of a couple of longterm choices, chief among them Hugh Wolff. We got a chance to work with him a couple of seasons ago. In fact it was Zarathustra. It was just awful I could not imagine him with CSO. Maybe he's been over there and they love him. Here he didn't go over well at all. Dohnanyi is competent but rather pedestrian in the things I've heard him do. But he was with Cleveland for quite a while so maybe the up and personal experience is different from the audience perspective.

But yeah, the "bide their time" approach is what I think is at play.

Maybe they're just waiting for you to get bored with playing trumpet so they can buy out your contract with MYS

Yes, the full CSO press release makes this pretty clear. But, what I'm having trouble with is, who are they waiting for? When I see excited references to "Ricardo Muti being available", I begin to look for signs of the apocolypse.

When you consider that even "another Barenboim" seems out of reach, the idea of "another Reiner or Solti" appears silly. I guess I'm wondering if the genus had simply reached near extinction. Maybe it's time to look for another model, not so centered on the all-mightly MD? Is it barely possible the CSO has some ideas in that realm of radical thought?

CSO? Radical thought? I doubt it.

It's like it was with Herseth's chair. This will take a lot of time for them. The big wheels, they turn slowly...

Please .......it was a first trumpet opening that was filled. The Chicago Symphony will find a fine conductor.
Say, didn't I say the same thing about the trumpet chair
