| New Friend | Hi there! I was just wondering if you absolutely have to know how to sightread in an orchestra setting? I am totally blind and memorize all of my music. I want to be in a symphony someday, but is it possible in my situation? Thanks! |

I don't know how most blind players handle the situation, but I'd assume you would need to really work on knowing all the standard repertoire cold, and be really organized and prepared. Let us know how it goes! |

| Re: Do You Have to Sight Read? I suspect the best person to discuss this with might be Jim Pandolfi, based on his experiences. I don't have his contact info, but someone else here might. 2 practical scenarios in which sight-reading is important come to mind immediately. 1. You show up to the first rehearsal for a concert set, having been given the rep list in advance, to find that for one reason or another (soloist cancelled / soloist changed piece / conductor was called away and there is a sub / etc. ) the repertoire for that concert has been changed. In these cases, advance notice is rarely given to the orchestra, since a. the administration is scrambling to deal with the situation, and there isn't sufficient time to get parts to the players. b. there is an expectation that the orchestra will be able to handle the switch. 2. The orchestra is premiering a new piece. Often the composer is making revisions while you are rehearsing, and a new version shows up on your stand after a break. If you can develop your own method for handling situations like those, then you will probably be fine. You know your own abilities far better than any of us - give it your best, and keep us posted. |

That being said, why not pursue a solo career. They will follow your lead. Alec Templeton comes to mind as a soloist, I'm sure there were others. Wilmer

I remember a blind person using a computer in a Robert Redford movie a decade ago, but I don't know how realistic that was. Morris
