I found out this morning via radio report and when I first heard his name mentioned my gut tightened until the report continued with "stepping down" and in a way it was a relief. You always expect to hear the worst about someone when you hear a news report starting with their name. He adores his wife, Emily, and when he's quoted as saying "his lovely wife and best friend, Emily" you'd better believe it. It's not one of those Hollywood hype stories. He really loves her very much and I'm sure he's going to be happy to have the time to enjoy whatever he'll be up to. I'll savor every moment working with the man next season. G-d bless him. ML

![]() | I'm glad that he's announcing it in advance so that he'll be given a proper fairwell, and so that I can go see him play and conduct a few more times. I only got to see him once last year, so hopefully I'll get out to a few more this year. -Jimi |

WOW! Doc IS the reason I'm playing the trumpet. I saw him when I was in fourth grade, some 35 years ago, and I'm still in awe of his abilities. I had the great pleasure of finally meeting him four years ago at a reception after a MO concert, and what a treat. I had an old copy of the program he played from that concert when I first heard him, and he actually remembered some of the details of Rochester and that concert. Of course I had him autograph it. I am definately going to go see him this upcoming season to say goodbye and wish him well. Thanks for all the memories Doc. Warren Bandel

Life goes on I took a moment to chat with him at the ITG. I used the fact that my cousin, Steve Wiest, used to work for him as an ice breaker. He looked great, seemed as sharp and witty as ever. I didn't get to hear him play or demo any fo the horns he was representing, though. I have heard he is playing just great! I think it's too bad he's leaving, but I'm sure he's looking for a new chapter in his life. I mean, as a musician, he's done it all! Brvao to Doc. He has been an inspiration to me as long as i've been playing and will continue to be so. Nick

Doc is simply a living legend, a link to so much in American music in general and trumpet playing in particular. I wish him the best in everything. Is he still moving to Mexico? Michael McLaughlin (who may not be far behind) Politics doesn't make strange bedfellows - marriage does. Groucho Marx

Hi, all - Just wanted to let you know that I'm printing this out & sending to Doc. I know he will be very touched. I don't travel with him anymore but you can bet I'm going to fly out to see a few of his shows this coming season. It was one thing to quit the road but know that I could hop on a plane & travel to hear one of his shows. It's another thing when there simply won't be those shows to attend. :( Manny - I heard Doc's name from the TV the other day while I was in the another room. My mouth went dry & my head started to spin. I thought something terrible had happened. Turns out I was listening to an ad for Dean Martin roast videos. He and Emily are still planning on moving to Mexico but nothing has yet been settled as far as the move date.
