Re: E flat Flugelhorn for Mahler's third posthorn solo

It never occurred to me that such an instrument even existed! It would be a question of finding a proper mouthpiece that could control the pitch. I have a Bb flugelhorn with a mouthpiece that helps it sound beautifully.

Thanks for providing the link and some new information!

Bud told me one time his weapon of choice for the Posthorn solo was an Eb Cornet with a deeper than normal mouthpiece. This Eb flugel would be interesting, providing the intonation is good........

Re: E flat Flugelhorn for Mahler's third posthorn solo

Here in COsta Rica we have one owned by the orchestra, it plays out of tune, but it is very old also and I guess someone could repair this intonation problem, maybe a new one could be more in tune. I also think that with the propper mouthpiece could be a good option for that solo.

regards,

Luis.

I have an old Eb cornet that used to belong to Mel Broiles... who knows?

Maybe with something like a Wick 2B cornet mouthpiece, if you can tolerate that thin rim. I bet Dave M. could make something better, though..

Re: E flat Flugelhorn for Mahler's third posthorn solo

Do people tend to play the posthorn solo on a smaller (Eb, D, etc.) horn to alleviate some of the physical strain of the passage or to replicate the sound of an old posthorn? I have never had to perform the solo and don't quite understand why it isn't usually played on a Bb or C trumpet.

Manny and others,

I played the posthorn solo once in Rotterdam on exactly the flugelhorn described above. It worked wonderfully.

Re: E flat Flugelhorn for Mahler's third posthorn solo

Maybe it's just me, but I would shy from the flugel. Remember posthorn still has a brilliance to it that Flugels lack. A Cornet would fit tone more, or an actual post horn lol. Just try to get a pure sound and shine with it. I've even used C trumpet with a felt bag over the bell..

Jon, as I remember that flugel model is not as dark as Bflat flugelhorns, at least the one I played. Have you played one?

For Ed, How was the intonation in the one you played?
