Easy Trumpet Concertos

Hi,
I'm wanting to enter a trumpet concerto competition, but I only have from now until Dec. 1st to get it recorded and sent in! Does anybody have any suggestions of an easy trumpet concerto (that orchestra parts are found for) that I could learn in less than a month? I'm an advanced trumpet player, but I don't have a lot of time!

God bless!

Hard to say over the internet what would be a good piece for you. Do you have a teacher. What does "advanced" mean to you?

Yeah, my college professor recommended the Artunian, but I really don't think I can pull it off in a month. I've played the Hadyn and Hummel, but I can't perform it because they've been performed recently in the competition. I would say my skills of "advanced" are best described by the fact that last year (my senior year in high school) I received a 1 at State for Napoli by Herman Bellstedt.

You have to express those feelings to your teacher and see what he or she says. If you do not have 100% faith in your teacher you need to find a new one.

You have a great "live" resource. Put it to use.

You could try the Neruda Concerto, since you have already done Haydn and Hummel. There is an arrangement of the Goedicke Concert Etude for trumpet and strings as well. I have a set of the string parts - I don't know if they are still available or not. But I might consider renting them out if you needed them.

If you play piccolo trumpet, you could try Torelli, or Leopold Mozart. Might be a stretch on Bb though.

I forgot to list the Neruda Concerto as another I'm not allowed to perform due to its recent use.
I also forgot to mention that the concerto, when performed, must be at least 15 minutes long. Concert Etude would be good because I performed it two years ago, but I don't know if it would be at least 15 minutes long. What do you think?

Re: Easy Trumpet Concertos

A 15 minute Concerto with less than 3 weeks to prepare - a pretty tall order!

The 15 minute requirement rules out baroque literature. those concertos are 10 minutes max!

Maybe the Concerto in Ab Minor by Bernard Fitzgerald would be suitable?
The Sachse Concertino may also qualify. I do not know the timings though! If you have good high chops, the Albrechtsberger in Eb is a WONDERFUL piece. You need at least an Eb trumpet to perform it though.

I remember in New York NYSSMA (NYSSMA) had a published list of pieces suitable for the various performance categories. I think the Hummel was grade 5 and the Haydn grade 6

Thank you for the information.
Do I need something besides a Bb trumpet to play Fitzgerald or Sachse? Also, I couldn't find the list in the site link that you gave me.

Re: Easy Trumpet Concertos

Arutunian seems the most doable, even though it's a hefty order with this much notice. Perhaps the Giannini might be another option.

NYSSMA no longer gives away the list - you have to buy the manual, and you have to be a member to do so.

Sachse is written for Eb cornet/trumpet - it might be a stretch on Bb.

Arutunian, Giannini, Pahkmutova, Boehme and Goedicke (Concerto, op. 41 - not the Concert Etude) are all for Bb, but probably the Arutunian or Giannini would be the easiest to get together.

I don't know how easy it is to get orchestra parts for any of the Russian works nowadays - Arutunian might be the easiest to find. I would suggest following your teacher's advice and work really hard on the Arutunian.

I would suggest following your teacher's advice and put your energy into learning the Arutunian - none of the others are significantly easier. It has a lot of repetition in it, so once you know some of it, you know more than you think!

If you don't get it up to snuff and don't do the competition this year, is the world seriously going to come to an end? Can you do the competition next year? 3 weeks lead time isn't a lot to really learn a new piece - only you can decide whether it is worth your energy at this particular time.

Best of luck, whatever you decide.
