![]() | European orchestral trumpet superstars... ...Who are and were they? This is a question for anyone, although I'm sure Manny and Rowuk would be great resources. Growing up with a brass player for a father and in my general education, I certainly heard the names Phil Smith, Vacchiano, Tom Stevens, Mark Gould, Mel Broiles, Michael Sachs, Hering, Ghitalla, Laureano and their ilk. But in Europe, who are the orchestral players everybody salivates over? Who is listened to, emulated, canonized, worshipped, etc.? I realized a little while ago that the only players from Europe I'm really that familiar with are soloists. I wouldn't be surprised if a thread exists for this but I didn't find it offhand. I'd be appreciative of having this gap filled in. Thanks! |

![]() ![]() | I'm not European, but I can give you a few: (no particular order) Maurice Murphy - London Sym. Hans Gansch - Vienna Phil. Konradin Groth - Berlin Phil. Horst Eichler - Berlin Phil. Paolo Longinotti - Orchestre de la Suisse Romande I'm sure others will come up with many many more. Check out some of Derek Reaban's work on the TH too. Some great research in putting names with famous orchestras for given time periods - very helpful in determining who is playing on some great recordings. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | My shortlist- in addition to the previously mentioned artists: Dennis Ferry-Suisse Romande Marc Ullrich-Basel Reinhold Friedrich-Frankfurt Urban Agnas-was in Sweden-now teaches in Cologne Frits Damrow-Concertgebouw Matthias Höfs- Hamburg(also with German Brass) There is a new very young solo trumpet player at the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Frankfurt who is AWESOME-Balázs Nemes Classical Soloists Niklas Eklund, Ed Tarr, Maurice André, Hakan Hardenberger, Michael Laird, Hermann Sauter, Friedemann Immer, Guy Touvron This is just a list of the "spectacular" players that come immediately to mind. There are so many great players here that just "do their job" and unfortunately don't get the national or international press. I'm sure it is the same in America.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi, I would agree with many of the names listed above, especially regarding the current ones. Please add Rod Franks (LSO), Peter Masseurs (Royal Concertgebouw Orkest) and Tamás Velenczei (Berliner Philharmoniker -- his Mahler 5 is my absolute favorite) Robin, Balázs Nemes is known in the states. He was appointed principal trumpet at the MET (replacing Mark Gould, his teacher at Juilliard) and was one of the five on trial in Chicago before Chris Martin's appointment. The "A List" conductors love him. Balázs only lasted a few weeks at the MET, prefering to return to his excellent post at the HR-Sinfonieorchester. I have his Spada piston C trumpet, which he gave up when he switched exclusively to rotary trumpets 4 or 5 seasons ago. Best, EC PS: Giuliano Sommerhalder (http://www.giulianosommerhalder.com/...nglish/?Rpage=) was recently appointed principal trumpet of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. He will be sensational. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | This is really interesting. We have essentially universal qualities for getting jobs. Just about anybody can go anywhere regardless of race or origin - they just have to be good enough. This only works in the music business!
