Excerpt Books

What are the best orchestra excerpt books? Right now I am using the 4 volume Rob Roy McGregor set. The problem is that I run into audition lists with excerpts that aren't in these books. I guess I am looking for a more complete set. Any suggestions?? ... on another topic ... Who's going to the National Trumpet Competition this year?

Re: Excerpt Books

Excerpt books...well get mine sorry some self-promotion. They are published by Hickman Music editions. Other than that try to get as many parts as you can. Books are a great resource but at the end you really need the parts.

The Hickman publications are great. Here another source for complete parts Orchestra Musician's CD-ROM Library from Hickey's Music Center

The Norris "Top 50 Orchestral Audition Excerpts" book is awesome.

Re: Excerpt Books

I've used the McGregor books and the books compiled by Voisin.
I've also heard good things about the CD-ROM. However, I always tried to get the full parts to the pieces I was learning. The ones that are available really don't cost that much.

Re: Excerpt Books

Cherry Classics CD (scroll down to #54) has a huge number of complete parts. I have this and the Hickman set, and highly recommend both. Between the two you have almost everything you'll need.

Re: Excerpt Books

I think its best to get the actual parts if you can find them. These days I know you can buy a bunch of them on CD in PDF file.

Re: Excerpt Books

Just a reminder:

The CDs that you can buy and print parts from only include those works which are in the public domain. You aren't going to (at least legally) find a CD that has the parts for such things as Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Miraculous Mandarin, Pictures at an Exhibition, Ravel Piano Concerto, Pine of Rome, etc. Works that are rental only can't legally be scanned and sold. Unfortunately, most audition lists have several of those works on them. Fortunately, most orchestras generally send copies of the rental only music, which they say must be returned at the audition (although few rarely bother anyways).

The Orchester Probespiel volume is used frequently in Europe - it also contains many of the most frequently asked excerpts.

The best way to get copies of actual parts is to speak with someone playing in a major orchestra and see what they will let you copy, for educational purposes.
