excerpts and mutes

Hi Manny,

I was wondering if you could share what mutes you use for some of the standard "mute" excerpts. Specifically Fetes and Shosti' Piano concerto. If any others jump to mind that you'd like to mention that'd be great too. Thanks.

Matt

Re: excerpts and mutes

TH,

I am not Manny and he will surely pup up in this forum...Don't play often the Fetes but I when I do use the trumcore lyrical mute which is great for that kind of music. I am not sure how popular this mute may be in the states, but I found that the intonation is very good, and the sound is close to perfect. I imagine than AMR wooden mutes can be used instead with great succes. I never played Schosti' Piano concerto. Manny?

Re: excerpts and mutes

Have you seen the Sotto Voce mute (available from www.hickmanmusiceditions.com) - to quote from the website
Designed by David Hickman and Eric Baker, the new Sotto Voce straight mute is perfect for soft passages such as Enesco's LEGEND, Copland's QUIET CITY, Shostakovich's PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1, SYMPHONY NO. 1, Debussy's FETES, and hundreds of other works.

I have had one of these since they came out - I have only used it a couple of times, but when you are looking for that sort of mute, you want one.

Was doing Chichester Psalms a few weeks ago and the 1st trumpet borrowed it for the ending - he then ordered one himself.

Re: excerpts and mutes

The fact is we have so many mutes (you really wouldn't believe it if you saw our mute self... I'm not exaggerating when I say there are over a hundred mutes of varying types and sounds) that I use different mutes for the same pieces.

I have some favorites, though. For soft playing we have Hickman's mute and we have these wooden mutes made in Köln. Rick Giangiulio's TrumCor mutes are excellent for many differnt types of playing and play extremely well in tune as do the METAL Marcus Bona mutes. I very much dislike the fiberglass ones.

We also have some Turkish (I think) mutes that look as though they're made of hardened twine that were wrapped around some mute form that are also excellent.

On and on. Make your own choice based on color and intonation.

Re: excerpts and mutes

For Shostakovich, I saw Grant Park do it about 10 years ago, and Brian Perry used the Bach Plastic. I think Gary Bordner was using a Montreal mute when I saw the SPCO do it a year or so ago. (I assume you are asking about the slow movement solo) Otherwise I second Manny's advise.

Check out the Fetes - Mute Choice? ( 1 (Fetes - Mute Choice?) 2 (Fetes - Mute Choice?)) thread for more information on this subject.

Hey Manny,

On the subject of mutes and different pieces, what do you use for the Arutunian Concerto? I have had trouble finding a mute that I like for this piece that combines sound, projection, and ease of playing.

Thanks,
Ethan

Re: excerpts and mutes

Manny and folks,
Has anyone ever tried the Trumcore Straight Mute for Piccolo? The site is saying that it has been designed for stuff like Pertushka and and the Pictures and sound quite interesting...

I really like the Trumcor Picc straight mute. It feels really open and even to me, and is very loud and metallic sounding.

I prefer a cup mute for that section, Ethan. It needs to be a sweet sound.
