Extra French Horn? Hey Manny, I was at the MN Orchestra concert last night. I enjoyed it very much and noticed there was an extra french horn on stage for "Don Quixote" and Shostakovich 10. What was the reason for that? Cheers, Bill Simenson (aka St. Paulitan)

Hey Bill, Manny would know for sure, but I would guess it was an assistant. That is common amongst the horn world. BTW, I listened to the broadcast Friday night and it was incredible. I would have loved to have been there for the Saturday concert to experience it in person. Did Tony (the cellist) rock the house on "Don Quixote" or what?

Actually, Don Quixote is written for six horns, Bill, and an assistant is always used as Alex mentioned. Yes, Alex, Tony was a friggin' monster this week. I've played that with him before and I remember on the last run he broke a string EVERY NIGHT!! There was much passing of instruments. Ooh.. that sounds painful. ML

Speaking of passing instruments....... You sounded great on the new horn Manny. Everything was sweet and spot-on. Plus, you kicked major buttocks on the Shosti with a huge, gorgeous sound. Bravo!

Thanks, Alex.. Is there anybody from the Houston area on the boards? The conductor was Hans Graf who is the MD of Hoston Symphony. He was very nice but I was wondering what he was like to live with either as an orchestra momber or from the regular audience member perspective. ... and may you never have to pass a trumpet. ML

Thanks for the information; I knew they were written for six and four horns respectively, just the additional player threw me. Interesting contrast between the writing of young Shostakovich (Scherzo) and the mature (10th). Best, Bill
