Fetes - Mute Choice?

I've been working on the Fetes excerpt (from Debussy's Three Nocturnes) again, and I have not been happy with a mute choice. I've heard several different choices on recordings (from what sounds like a cup mute mixed down at a lower volume, to a practice mute).

What are some suggestions for this excerpt...what have other people used before? I've been trying to track down a Spivak Whispa Mute, but can't for the live of me find a single place that has one in stock.

Any ideas?

mutes

Years ago I remember doing it with the Spivak, but more recently with the Jo-Ral practice mute. There are some new "quiet" mutes out now that I have not tried that might work well.

Those good 'ol plastic Bach mutes with the stick-on artificial cork are perfect for Fetes.

The blue "Chicago mute" is a good one. If you don't have one of those, the plastic Bach with cotton inside works great. I usually default to the Bach.

Doh! I forgot about that jewel. You are right Mike. The sotto voce mute is a wonderful choice. I have tried a few of them, but have yet to pick one up. I must add it to the list of "must haves" for my mute collection.

Scott-

Find me at school sometime and try my "Kosaka" Mute. A friend of mine who now works at Monette started making them when he was at NEC. I'm not sure exactly what it's made of, but it works perfectly for things like Fetes, although you would probably want everyone in the section to get one.
