Brian H. Smout has a spectacular aura about
German Army Veterans - Taps/Last Post equiv.?

Hi All,

An old, quite literally, 84 year old friend is gravely ill. He was a Ukrainian national drafted into the German Army at age 17 during WW2 and was captured by the Russians. He survived the prison camp to become a lifelong farmer in Canada. If required at his funeral and requested by the family, I would like to know if there is a German Army Last Post or Taps and where I might find a copy of the sheet music?

Thanks for any suggestions or help,

Brian

In German it is called "Zapfenstreich"

There are a number of different versions. Here's one.

Zapfenstreich der Pfeifer (ca. 1780):

Re: German Army Veterans - Taps/Last Post equiv.?

On a natural trumpet in D one only needs to "cheat" a bit on the written "c#" in the staff in the first part, and the bottom line "e" in the second part can be changed to an "a" without ruining the harmony.

There are some other, easier melodies written for natural instruments; the one I've found in my quick search was written for hunters with Jagdhorns. They also had nifty calls like"Seehund Tot" (seal dead), my favorite was "Sau Tot" (pig dead), which in the Swabian dialect could also mean "extremely dead!"

An image search on one of the search engines under Zapfenstreich" could be used to find more.

Quite often a tune is played "Ich hatt' einen Komeraden".

Ich hatt' einen Kameraden / Bonus commiltio / Yo tena un camarada / Avevo un camerata free midi mp3 download Strand Hotel Sechelt bed breakfast

and the sheet music

Thanks Rowuk,

I think I may have even played this one in the past with a beer garden band. It seems less taxing than the other piece. I was thinking that it would have been a tough blow at graveside leaning into the prairie wind!

Cheers,

Brian
