![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Getting into the symphony? Keep practicing. Play LOTS of auditions - LOTS OF THEM. Not everyone can have the same track record a Phil Smith does, though there is no reason to doubt you could. Just don't COUNT on it! The last audition I turned up on they listened to HUNDREDS of players (not an exaggeration) for the 4th chair. You should have heard some of the guys who DIDN'T get the gig! Ok, it was the CSO and some of the best players in the world came out of the woodwork, but the competition has only gotten stiffer. My sincere and humble best wishes to you in your endeavor! Peace! Nick

![]() | Re: Getting into the symphony? You don't say if you still have a private teacher. If not find one who is doing what you want to do. Study with them and play lots and lots of excerpts. Then go out and take as many auditions as possible. You'll be surprised at what you can learn from them. Keep auditioning and at some point with some skill and lot's of work you will get there. |

step one: study with a teacher in one of those orchestras step two: practice more than he does step three: buy a bunch of books with orchestral excerpts - memorize them from cover to cover step four: buy a Bach or Yamaha C trumpet step five: buy the Charlier Etude Book and play it in C step six: learn Ab, A, Bb, D, Eb, E, F and G transposition If after the 5 years or so that it takes you to accomplish this, you still have to ask the same question, you do not have what it takes. My experience shows that players that are suitable find orchestras to play in before they even go to school. They have a sizable repertory down before they start looking for a job. This is not something that they suddenly discover after they leave music school. To other TMers. Be careful with posts like this. They can be honest from very naive players, but also can be from people looking to start trouble. Do not pile on if someone gets nasty. PLEASE!
