Two Orchestral Trombone Giants Pass

This was on Jay Friedman's website about Robert Lambert
Quote:
I have some sad news; My former teacher and mentor, Robert Lambert passed away Sunday April 1st at the age of 86. He was principal trombone of the CSO from 1954-64. He was a guiding hand in my career as a musician and will be sorely missed. For those of you that would like to hear and see an historic document of Bob and the CSO brass you must see the clip on Youtube of Hindemith conducting the Chicago Symphony in his Concert Music for Strings and Brass from 1963. Actually I played assistant on that week's program but I was not on the TV taping. That was my very first season in the orchestra.

Also saw this link on the TH about Glenn Dodson:

International Trombone Association :: News

Does anyone know how I can change this thread title? I saw the Friedman link after I had posted the one about Glenn Dodson, but I can't seem to change the thread title - only the post title.

Gary Schutza will become famous soon enough
Re: Glenn Dodson - R.I.P.

I am very sorry to heard about Glenn's passing. I was in his brass choir during my time at Curtis, and I learned a great deal from him. He was also the coach of my brass quintet, and taught me a great deal about musicality.

Keep in mind that Frank Kaderabek is now one of my best friends, very supportive. But this wasn't really the case while I was in school studying with him. He was an extremely demanding teacher who expected his students to strive for perfection as hard as he did, to care about playing as passionately as he did. And when you occasionally (or in my case, frequently) didn't measure up, he could destroy you with a very few words.
I ran into Glenn on the street after one of those disastrous lessons. I was sort of in a daze, feeling like a wasted life. Glenn walked with me a while and talked to me like a father. He explained to me about how Mr. Kaderabek cared passionately for his art, his responsibility to teaching, and his students. He informed me that I wasn't nearly as bad as I thought I was. We talked for quite a while about those things he had seen improve in my playing and in my character. Did me an enormous good.
I kept in touch with him a little over the years, but had not seen him in 10 years or so. The last time we talked I told him about a new brass choir that we had started within the Kansas City Symphony. He was so interested that he sent me a large packet of charts that he no longer needed. And refused to let me pay him for them. A gentleman.

I'm afraid we will be hearing about many, many passings in the near future. The last, perhaps greatest, generation of players is getting older rapidly. We've already lost Vaccianno and Ghitallia. The business will be much diminished when they're gone.

Re: Glenn Dodson - R.I.P.

A great musician, he. Have always enjoyed his sound, approach, and musicianship. I know that his students admired him greatly and has left a wonderful legacy of recordings to live on.

Thank you for the committment to art, Mr. Dodson.
