| Forte User | Grace notes I have a student working on a piece by Rameau (a sax player). How are the grace notes placed? I notice his dates bridge the late baroque and early classical, so I'm not quite sure how they should be performed. Thanks.

![]() | It's hard to answer without seeing the music. The "rules" have much more to do with specific ornaments (appogiatura, etc.) and harmony rather than rhythmic values. At any rate, in many instances what looks like a "grace note" in baroque pieces is actually an apoggiatura, cambiata, or some such thing, and the "little" note falls upon the beat in question rather than before it. Also, these are often played as longer note values than the fast grace note we're usually accustomed to. |

| Forte User | Thanks, Robert. Manny- I'm still chuckling a bit. Thanks...after 3 hours of listening to trombones playing the same piece I needed that!
