Thanks, John, that was quite fascinating.

Try your hand at the musical quiz video that's there, too. Try and guess the trumpet section they show... I think I can name 2 of them. (Hint: NY, late 60s or early 70s, by the looks of it.)

Re: Great Leonard Bernstein Video

John,

Thanks for posting that clip! I have the Leonard Bernstein Unanswered Question discs, and there are several themes that are covered in those talks which are mentioned here as well (i.e. composer and conductor – 2 men trapped in the same body).

I love the shot of the trumpet section from about 0:30 to 0:40. Is that Helmet Wobisch, Joseph Levora, or Adolf Holler on principal? Here is a shot of Helmut Wobisch and I really can’t tell…

Did you see the player holding the big F trumpet at the far end of the section…Very cool! And hearing Bernstein lead the rehearsal in German. Wow. I’m amazed every time I watch him in action.

Glenn,

I enjoyed watching your clip too! The trumpets are shown between 2:59 - 3:02 on the clip and L-R I believe it’s James Smith (?) and William Vacchiano. I remember getting to play the Prokofiev Classical Symphony years ago with my instructor and the Phoenix Symphony on with both of us on rotaries. What a thrill!

Re: Great Leonard Bernstein Video

I looked on Page 11 of this Really Cool Document about Vienna Trumpet Players and still couldn't tell who was playing Principal in that Mahler 5 clip with Bernstein. Does anybody know? Possibly Josef Hell?

Re: Great Leonard Bernstein Video

The trumpets in the Prokofiev are William Vacchiano and Carmen Fornarotto.
Carmen replaced Nathan Prager in the NYP.

Re: Great Leonard Bernstein Video

Thanks Wilmer! At least I’ve seen enough pictures of Nat Prager and John Ware to have ruled them out. Next time, maybe I’ll get the right answer! It sure would be nice to have photos of all of these players to put the name with the face (Symphony Trumpet Players Yearbook?)

Any guess on the player in the Mahler 5 clip from Vienna?

Maybe Manny has a picture of Jimmy Smith. Jimmy had a smile you would never forget.

Re: Great Leonard Bernstein Video

Wilmer,

I'm so sorry to say I don't. My family was not much at taking pictures and we never got one with my beloved teacher and friend, Jimmy Smith. You are absolutely right, however. He had a great smile and a gentle manner that I remember with fondness.
