| Pianissimo User | Gunther Schuller Trumpet Concerto Hi everyone, I am looking for a recording of this piece. I know it was originally written for Gerard Schwarz, but I haven't been able to find the recording (its probably on LP?). Has anyone else recorded this piece? I'd also be curious to hear if anyone has played/performed this and what your impressions were. Matt |

![]() | Matt, To the best of my memory the Schuller Concerto was written for Gerry but never performed by him (he had abandoned the horn for the baton by then). I'm pretty sure that Steve Burns gave the first performance at the 92nd st. Y, probably with Gerry conducting. I don't believe that it has been commercially recorded (a quick Google will tell that tale). Best, EC |

| FYI, the ITG's January 2005 issue includes an article on Schuller's concerto by Peter Wood. According to the article, the concerto "was commissioned on behalf of, and first performed by, the virtuoso trumpeter-conductor Gerard Schwarz in August 1979. In the 25 years since its premiere, the piece has never been recorded commercially, and has been performed, to this author's knowledge, only five times - four times by Stephen Burns and once by John Wallace - the last performance occurring in 1984." | Pianissimo User | For anyone who is interested or doing a search on this work: I got a chance to look at the music for this, and found out how amazingly difficult the concerto is. What is interesting is that Schwarz writes that the piano reduction should not be used for performance under any circumstances, just reference for a performer working to perform the work with chamber orchestra. I guess I'll stick with Haydn for my jury! -Matt |
