Hardenberger recordings on BIS

Poking around ITunes the other day, I found several recordings by Hardenberger on the BIS label which I had not seen before:

- Solo trumpet works by Holloway/Gruber/et al
- "The Virtuoso Trumpet"
- Martinsson/Part/Tamberg Trumpet Concertos
- A recording with the Helsingborg Symphony of a Riisager Concertino

Wow! Excellent playing - the solo trumpet recording is particularly good - high-quality contemporary stuff that I had not heard before...

Anyone else have these recordings?

Yes, I had them before he went to Philips.

The reason people are discovering them again is that the BIS lable was sold to Naxos and they have re released these recordings.
Check out the recording of the Maxwell Davis Sonata on the Virtuoso trumpet CD.

Fantastic news---I hadn't heard about the re-releases. Thanks for the heads-up.

Yes! I was listening to that in the car on the way to work this morning. I really like his take on the Honneger Intrada on there as well...

Yeah, "Virtuoso Trumpet" is pretty incredible, especially for a 23 year old. The Francaix Sonatine recording is one of my favorites - used to listen to that over and over during college, and led me to perform it grad school.

I think in some ways he sounds better on this CD than on much of the later Philips stuff.

Shazam is freakishly good!

Holy cow - it didn't even hit me that "Virtuoso Trumpet" was released 13 years ago or something like that, when he was that young...

Makes that album even more remarkable

Re: Hardenberger recordings on BIS

1985 - 21 years ago

My office used to be downstairs from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and on the floor in between they had a rehearsal room with a grand piano used for occasional sectional rehearsals or for visiting soloists.
I remember one day hearing some fantastic trumpet playing coming from upstairs only to phone up and find out it was Hakan Hardenberger who was appearing as a soloist that night.
I just opened the window and had a good listen!
