Haydn Concert with Eb or Bb?

A good number of orchestras request as admision test ,together with the usually Tomasi and different Orchestra except brands like the famous Rimsky Korsakov Scherezade fragment, the perfomance of the Haydn Concert but only with the Bb instrument and not with the Eb trumpet.
Personally, I find more balanced the sound of the Bb in this wondeful piece, a lot more rich, little more darker, warm, and taking in full count all the posibilites of the instrument.A excelent example of that is the version of Timofei Dokshitzer.

In Weidinger times , the choice of the instrument was a a dream; enough was to have this few two or three keys to performe the Concert writed for him by his friend Haydn. His virtuosity had no egal ,to gain the admiration of compositor like the great Joseph Haydn.

What do you think? Bb or Eb for the Haydn?

Daniel

Bb definitely. I think the darker sound is much more pleasing.

Re: Haydn Concert with Eb or Bb?

I learned it on both, but I prefer to play it on Eb. That being said I have a darker than usual Eb trumpet. In reality though, if I needed to play it for an audition I'd probably play it on Bb just because it's the horn I sound best on.

Re: Haydn Concert with Eb or Bb?

I have only worked on this piece on my Eb trumpet but have tried to play it on Bb as well. I have a feeling that If I spent some time I could make it sound good on Bb but with my Eb I feel like it does the work for me. (It should be known that my Eb trumpet is a much better horn, all around, than my Bb)

Re: Haydn Concert with Eb or Bb?

Bb rotary is required for German trumpet auditions. Once the trumpeter gets the gig, they usually (not always) wimp out and perform on the Eb.

I learned it on the Bb initially. But, have worked on the Eb also. I prefer the sound of the Bb. And, like another poster said, it is the horn that I play more, so I sound better on it.

Re: Haydn Concert with Eb or Bb?

The answer is BOTH:

I prefer to HEAR it on Bb.

I prefer to PERFORM it on Eb.

Yes, I'm a lazy so-and-so!

I own a very good Eb trumpet.
I have performed the Haydn twice and both times I did it on Bb.
Its more comfortable and sounds better.

Re: Haydn Concert with Eb or Bb?

In an audition situation where you would probably only play the exposition, I think the Bb would be the best choice. Otherwise, I like Eb trumpet. It gives me more confidence which allows me to be more expressive in the high register.

Having said that, if my Eb sounded like a piccolo trumpet, I would probably stick to Bb. My Eb has a C trumpet bell on it, so you can't even tell its an Eb trumpet.

What a beautiful piece of music!
