Haydn Creation - which trumpet?

Hi,

I have agreed to play the Haydn Creation in April and wondered if anyone knows for what trumpet it is written? Having sung it many times (but never played it) I don't remember that there's much to do in the trumpet part? But what is it scored for and which trumpet to use? The orchestra will be small and as ever I guess blending in will be important.

Your advice, suggestions and comments are most appreciated... Thanks very much

SeanP

Total guess - natural trumpet in C, based on my having done all the other big Haydn choral works.

I have done all of the Haydn masses on the four valve Eb trumpet for security. C to Eb is actually quite an easy transposition.
Would work fine on Bb trumpet.

Gee, I played it a long time ago. I'm pretty sure I used a C trumpet. Bring a book to read or crossword puzzles. Unless you play trombone (They double all the vocal lines!) there is a lot of down time.

Played it a few weeks ago. Both trumpets used C's. This will require two pedal F's at the very end of the last movement if you are playing second, but nothing crazy or out of the ordinary.
Definitely bring a book or crosswords.
Have fun!

Leave the book and crossword puzzles at home. Bring a score and listen.

That's great - thanks for the quick replies. I'll take my C along then - with a score and a book too!

Cheers,

Bringing a score is a good idea. Dover publications is cheap and easy to read. That's what I used. It's nice to see where you fit into the whole picture. The crosswords and books are for when the conductor is nit picking with the chorus.

When not listening, bug the violists.
