Hickman Edition of F.J. Haydn concerto

Hi,

I have the David Hickman edition of the Haydn concerto. It seems like a great, well laid-out edition. I'm having problems understanding just one little key point. Over many of the phrases/note combos in the piece, there are dashed slur marks that I recognize as phrase markings (from what I've seen). Are those to signify that Hickman suggest the notes be slurred, or that they should just be phrased together within the musical sentence? I've been playing them slurred, and I think they sound great like that--far better than if they were phrased together but still tongued.

Does anybody have any input on this? Thanks!

Re: Hickman Edition of F.J. Haydn concerto

Hello,

Having worked on the typesetting, the dashed marked above the music in HME are all editorial articulations. Same with accents in brackets. He wanted to keep the score as original as possible. So you know what has been added and what it original.

So I can play it slurred? I'm practicing it for a competition this fall, and I want it to sound its best without completely undermining Haydn's composing purposes. I think it sounds way better slurred!

I like the sound of the concerto slurred. I play it slur two and tongue two because I'm not a good enough player to slur it.

My teacher suggested that if I can't slur it I should tongue all of it but I can't make that sound good either.

You can ask Mr. Hickman on TH personally.

Re: Hickman Edition of F.J. Haydn concerto

Swissdude is right. Anything in brackets and slurs with dashed lines represent Hickman's interpretation and "edits" of the piece. He was kind enough to let everyone know what he "added" to the score and what was originally printed in the score by Haydn. As Hickman's editions are excellent, and he's a terrific player and teacher, you should have confidence knowing that playing with his editorial marks will give you a convincing interpretation. So, long story short, feel free to play it slurred!

Hi ABCgirl,

Remember that in Haydn's day, dymanics and articulations were almost always left up to the performer, and their own knowledge of performance practice of the day. Very rarely did they mark them into the parts. Or, they might mark some into the first violin, but that is about it. You have freedom and liberty with the articulations and dynamics, but it might be a good idea to follow an established opinion at the outset. You certainly can disagree with some things, and change if you see fit. Thats the beauty of music - the diversity. Your Haydn will be different than mine. That's what makes each performance so unique and special. Good luck!
