Trumpet Dad will become famous soon enough
Hummel in E

What key trumpet do most people use for Hummel Concerto in E(not Eb) when performing with an orchestra? Can it be done on a C or Bb?

Re: Hummel in E

One can play it on the E trumpet (oh boy! Yet another horn to buy!) but it lays well on the C trumpet--better than on the D. Playing on the Bb would put it in F# major, which has more sharps than we like to handle.

Re: Hummel in E

It's not so bad on C trumpet, actually. I was pleasantly surprised when I first looked at it on C.

Re: Hummel in E

Your question was about "most" people. The answer is an E trumpet.

It also works on a C trumpet with the slides pulled out to B. Then you play in F - a cinch.

The real pitch is subject to much conjecture. Several instruments from that period that I have seen in Vienna were tuned to A=465. Others much lower.

Unfortunately, we do not know if Anton Weidinger used the same trumpet for the Hummel as for the Haydn. The Hummel does not need as many keys to play the part as the Haydn.

The only reasons today for E major are the more brilliant sound of the orchestra and an easier job for the violins (perhaps also justification to buy another horn). A modern trumpet has a substantially different tone than the original (thank God), so there is no historical basis to support one preference over the other. Most recordings available in E have intonation issues not present in the Eb counterparts.

Yup. I have done this in E on C tpt and it opened a whole new can of worms. I think that it is good to alternate performing in E and Eb since it brings a new perspective of the same piece...new challenges. It's all healthy.
