![]() | JEFFREY WORK Oregon Symphony's new Principal trumpet player I just saw on ITG news section that my beloved Oregon Symphony in Portland Ore. has a new principal trumpeter by the name of JEFFREY WORK. I didn't have a clue that this position was up for grabs? Whaaaaat happened to my old mentor and friend, Fred Sautter, who is one of the greats. I can't find any info? |

![]() | Don, Fred Sautter decided to retire after thirty-some distinguished years with the orchestra. They had an audition for his replacement late last year and Jeffrey Work won the audition.

![]() | Fred is now retiring to Central Oregon, but first he went to the ITG convention, and has a long list of stuff to do before he really leaves Portland. But he's done with the symphony, several weeks ago now, the Mahler Seventh being the last item in a long and illustrious career. The audition was a while ago and Mr. Work won the job. Fred Sautter is a great player and helped so many students in so many ways, including me. But he's leaving in good health and spirits as far as I know. I talked with him a few weeks ago and he was very much looking forward to all the things he could now do that he couldn't before because he didn't have the time. I'm sure that many here on this board know and worked with him, and wish him well on his retirement.

![]() | Thanks...for your replies. It has been waaaaaaay back in the early days before the name change to Oregon Symphony that I first met this amazing trumpet master. Natually, I am so glad to hear, and had hoped that retirement was the reason that Fred was no longer at the OSO. Fred always had so many other passions and hobbies. I know he will be ever so busy. I am so glad to hear that he is doing well. The last time that I saw friend was at performance night a few years ago when Monette had invited Wynton and a few of the Linclon jazz bunch to perform one night during his Open House & Clinics. However many years had past since the last time that we had met...we were both a lot younger and I am certain that at first he didn't recognize me, but out of politeness, he remembered me for my (trumpet talent? Naw, perhaps my lack of talent? It was during the Seattle Worlds fair days that I had shared musical moments with Fred.. In truth...I was waaaaaaaaay in over my head, and I KNOW that he knew that. What an ICON of trumpet who gave soooooooooooooooo much to to many. Congratulations to Fred, he served us all so well. |

| New Friend | I've had the great pleasure of playing with and listening to Jeff Work here in Boston, and he is with out a doubt one of the most musical players I have heard. On top of that he's a great guy with a quick wit, and an interesting arsenal of equipment. I'll look forward to his success in Oregon.
