Jet Stream

Ok i was in melbourne over the weekend and i was able to see Tristram Williams (dedalus78), who is associate principal trumpet of the MSO and like geoffrey paynes protege, play this piece called jet stream by Peter Eötvös. I had never heard of this piece but was told by tristram that it was one of the hardest things around, but wow it was like amazing. His playin was just like awesome, i heard him on the radio playin the shostavovich a while ago but yeh it was awesome to hear him live.It was a reeli cool piece, cos i dont normally like those crazy pieces written for Hĺkan Hardenberger and the like but this one a reeli cool piece. http://www.schott-music.com/shop/9/show,174718.html Some day when im good enough i wanna play it

Thanks mate. It is indeed a wonderful (and very hard!) piece. If you want to hear it again the concert is broadcast nationwide (in Australia) Thursday night at 8. I'd say the Eotvos will be on at about 9:10.

Hey Tristram,

I was planning on getting along to that also, unfortunately been out of town for a while. Sounds like it went really well, congratulations. Anything coming up you would suggest getting along to?

Simon-
Depends what you are into. There are alot of interesting concerts going on in Melbourne; at the moment the MSO is doing the Metropolis Festival, all works from the past ten years or so. The concert on Monday night conducted by Brett Dean might be worth hearing.
After that the orchestra is back to its regular season- come and here the works of the great masters! Beethoven 4 in the last week of May (glorious piece)...the Copland/Barber concert in June looks interesting.... Britten, Mahler 6 and Alpine Symphony in July...
And of course, you should listen to the radio tomorrow night.

Guys,

Nice to see what's going on over on the other side of the world. dedalus, congrats on this piece, it sounds like a workout. Would you be so kind as to greet Geoffrey for me? It's literally been 21 years since I've seen him. When the MO went to Melbourne, he was kind enough to play extra for us on the Pines of Rome and was the nicest guy. In fact, all the Aussies I met that played that piece with us were wonderful.

It was after that tour that I said if there was one place on earth that I felt as comfortable as I did here at home it was Australia. Melbourne was a bit rainy then but a great place, nonetheless. Everyone I met whether on the street or at the concert hall was nothing but nice and friendly to me.

Your season coming up in July looks enviable and I hope you have a rollicking time!

G'day Manny-

I will give Geoff your greetings next time I see him. He's in Japan at the moment playing the Shosta piano concerto, but will be home in a few weeks.
I'm glad you had a good time when you were here, although I have to admit the weather you encountered in Melbourne may not have been all that unusual!

Hey Tristram,

I'll be listening tonight for sure, looking forward to it. Will have to get along to Mahler and the Alpine Symphony also as well as a few others this year. Thanks for the advice, catch you soon.

I also PM'd you with another question, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Simon
