![]() ![]() ![]() | La Virgen de la Macarena Ok, after supper this evening, I slapped this read through of the old Mendez treatment of La Virgen de la Macarena together. I hope some folks can enjoy this acapella version. Peace! Nick

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: La Virgen de la Macarena Hey TrumpetNick, I had not seen that before, thanks. However it takes NOTHING away from Nick D's video. Harry's version is a lot "looser" than the Mendez version.

| Forte User | Re: La Virgen de la Macarena Both Mendez and HJ play it superbly, though Mendez probably caught better the character of the piece. Harry James version is just...so Harry James

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: La Virgen de la Macarena Geeze, Rowuk! I thought I was getting beat up with the Harry James comparison, and then YOU come back with the whole wiki on the tune! Personally, my favorite will ALWAYS be Mendez! I realize my little thing pales by comparison to his or all of the others, but I don't think I've embarrassed myself, and I am my own worst critic. I've tried to stick to the Mendez transcription, but there are some really neat treatments in the list you sent. I'm too sure about the vocal thing, though, but I'm biased. BTW, I talk a lot about high gear and low gear. Watch the Arturo version and pay close attention to the end when he goes to the double E. High gear, baby! Big time! Cool! FWIIW, here is a post I made on TPIN sort of explaining some things. I've clipped some stuff out that doesn't fit here. From TPIN: Bob, that was a wafer thin mint! Dinner was sushi. Ok the mouthpiece was a Wedge 3CC-ST with a 25 throat and a W25-L heavy BB with a WTL shank. I hope that helps. The trumpet was a New York Trumpet Company Stage One California Light Bb trumpet designed by Felix Vayser. So much for the geek thing, eh, Glen? Hey, man, I am a geek, so don't take it the wrong way! I was dying for someone to ask me what gear I was using! I can sleep peacefully now! Mendez was my first hero and this was the first piece I ever tried to play of his. I tried to stay true to his transcription (I have virtually EVERY thing he ever wrote for Carl Fischer). I knew the litmus test most would apply to my little treatment would be the Mendez (though in TM, the Harry James version turned up - quite different stylistically). I do hope I'm at least in the ball park. I'd put in some more wood shed time if I were getting paid to record this. This is the best I could do with a couple of read throughs before rolling tape. On top of it, my dang PC was hanging up. The processor kept overloading. The reason for the stall on my part at the end was that my wife had bumped something on the other side of the wall behind my PC and I thought it had just frozen again, so I looked away at it! I know that looked a little weird, but I was starting to get sleepy. I know I'll never get to perform this stuff with a band or orchestra, or for that matter even with a pianist), so I am going to run some of my favorite Mendez pieces up on Youtube. I guess I just want it on record that I can even come close to doing this sort of thing. I get sort of pigeonholed as a lead/screech player, and my training in my master's degree was virtually all classical! I also hope that by putting up a more diverse set of excerpts on Youtube that I can bolster my position as a DMA candidate somewhere (hopefully U of I, pending the sorting out of MANY financial details!). Also, since I work on this sort of playing, I hate to just let it languish in my basment even if my gigs don't require these skills of me, right now. I want to share with those who would listen. So, I am extremely grateful for those who listened to my humble little clip. Here's the link again in case someone missed it and spotted this long diatribe! Thanks, all, and.... Peace! Nick

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: La Virgen de la Macarena Nick, you are in with the company that you deserve! You did a fine job and it is not false pride by ANY stretch of the imagination. The span of this piece from the vocal to the Mariachi all the way to the Jalapeno version by Mendez has always been important to me. All of that stuff needs to be in there. I really dig BIG voices with lots of emotion.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: La Virgen de la Macarena Thanks, Rowuk! I was just amazed at the range of research you put in and the range of performances that you and others dug up! Ok, I'm going to try to put something else up by tomorrow! I've got to do some digging (obviously, I'm off work tongiht). Peace! Nick
