Legende for Trumpet and Piano

I've been recently asked to prepare a piece to perform for a community orchestra concert, and I was thinking about Performing this piece. I've never played it before and I've only recently picked up the sheet music. I was wondering if someone familiar with the piece could help me with a few questions:

The sheet music comes with both Bb and C trumpet parts. The key is obviously easier on the Bb, but which would sound better? which key was the piece originally written for? I'm leaning towards the Bb version, simply because I'm not very fond with the sound on my Bach C229 trumpet. Would it be sacrilege to perform this on a Bb cornet?

I've heard that the first 15 bars are played muted or even of stage, but the sheet music makes no mention of this requirement. Can anyone verify this?

How demanding is the piano part? I'm not sure if I can track down a Pianist confident enough to play it. Anyone know where I can buy a recording of the Piano Accompaniment? It would be nice to have something I can practice to, and even perform to if necessary (hopefully not...)

note: this thread originally discussed a slightly different topic.

Re: Legende for Trumpet and Piano

You mean the Enesco, right?

The piece was written for C trumpet, but I've seen it done on Bb. I personally think it's easier on C, but it's no crime to do it on Bb.

The muted section is the last 15 or so bars of the piece.

You will need a pianist of the very highest calibre. If there was any doubt in my mind about finding someone who's "the real deal", I'd try to find a different piece.

I don't know of any "karaoke" versions, but that would be kind of lame to do it with a CD in concert, wouldn't it?

Best of luck! It's a beautiful piece.

Re: Legende for Trumpet and Piano

If you need to get disc with the accompaniment you could try June Emmerson's catalouge. She is based in North Yorkshire, England but has good website and excellent mail order service.

Re: Legende for Trumpet and Piano

I have a friend that performs this piece from a piano score. He says that it helps him with ensemble.

Re: Legende for Trumpet and Piano

I prefer the Bb part on a Bb trumpet as I like the sound for this piece better. (This is coming from a 98% C trumpet player.)

It can and has been done by really great players on C trumpet.

The piano part is very challenging. Not so much for the piano technique involved (there are more difficult piano accompaniments) but for the required ensemble of both the soloist and the pianist. It will take much dedication to become extremely familiar with the piano part so you can merge and become a single unit making music.

The ensemble part is much more challenging than either of the solo parts (trumpet and piano).

The muted part is at the end not the beginning.

Good luck.....Great piece.
