Maurice Murphy did retire a couple of years back. However, Rod Franks had some serious medical problems and Mr. Murphy came out of retirement and rejoined the orchestra. Rod Franks is healthy and playing again but I do believe that they are sharing the load. This may have changed since I heard last, but I am fairly certain this is the case. Hope this helps. Oh, and you really can't go wrong with either playing lead.

Maurice and Rod are Co-Principals at the moment.

FWIW I don't think trumpeters ever truely retire. Somebody told me recently that Bud Herseth is still performing with the CSO. Is this true? I could easily believe it. Playing the trumpet certainly keeps you young!

Yep; Bud has been playing 4th quite often. My understanding is that he's having a ball playing things that he's never before played.

No there will never be an equal but I think there are some amazing players out there who play at his level. Phil Smith is the first one that comes to mind in the orchestral genre. Phenominal Player!

I saw the LSO a couple of weeks ago doing Mahler 5, unfortunately I couldn't tell whether it was Rod Franks or Maurice Murphy on principal, but they sounded great!
