| Magnificat Variations, Bernhard Krol ...it's a very fun piece to play, difficult but by no means impossible (partially since it was written for the piccolo trumpet, not the clarino, etc), tonal, but with a few interesting curveballs. Has anyone seen this performed? Better yet, any recordings? Krol's not even in the Grove, but, hey, the song's cool and I like it. Who knows, I'm not that hung up on finding recordings for everything, but it's a hard enough piece to ear-train. I'm thinking of doing a recital/chamber recital on twentieth century works that look back to Bach, including a bit of Bach transcription maybe. I'm thinking Barber capricorn, Hindemith bassoon and trumpet concerto (underrated)--which aren't explicitly based on Bach but are very consciously influenced by his style (which, I suppose you could say of alot). There's the new Arvo Part piece for picc, but I imagine that's next to impossible. Yes, I'm aware that the Hindemith Sonata ends with a Bach chorale, but it's not really the vibe I'm going for. I don't want to perform that, anway, until I have all my physical issues completely (completely, completely) taken care of, so I'm applying what I learn rather than undoing it. | Great piece. One of my teachers, John Aley, was a big fan of this piece and I heard him perform it with the Madison Symphony back in the early 90s. After working on it for many years, I finally had the chance to play it with my orchestra in Toluca, Mexico in November of 2004. Definitely one of the underperformed masterpieces of our rep. When I played it the audience loved it as did my colleagues in the orchestra. The program also included the Hindemith Sym Metamorphosis and the Strauss Rosenkavalier Suite, and we all felt the Krol fit nicely with those pieces. JU |
