| Mezzo Piano User | Mahler 5 opening I've been working on some popular orchestral excerpts, and I'm having some problems with the low F at the end of the 'introduction' to the first movment. I don't think the range down there is an issue because I end my warmup everyday with a 3 octive F scale begining on that low F. And I can play it fine when it comes up in the first movment of the Hummel Concerto. But its just not speaking clearly when I play it here. What do you think the best way to practice this and get it clear? I've been working on lip slurs in the low register alot to help make the connection from the Bb to F smoother but it dosn't seem to help. When I slur down to the F it gets fuzzy and very hollow sounding. Thanks |

| This question seems to resurface every two weeks. Mahler's later edition with Peters omits the low F. The Kalmus is rarely used anymore and even if you did the low F is omitted without consequence. Leave it out. Consult a Peters score and leave it out. ML |

![]() | While you're at it leave the low Ebs out of the end of Heldenleben, wimps! Manny. give the tame hairy-legged violist back! This isn't Vulgano Brother kind of talk at all! Geez, guys, low notes are something we should have in our back pocket at all times. Has anyone still living gotten away with the "that note isn't in the other edition" excuse when called on the carpet by a conductor? Get some low chops, chumps! |

| Ha! The benefits of playing with a great orchestra is a great budget and not having to play most of the Kalmus editions of anything! They've put out some reprintings of some stuff and it's better, thank goodness. We played Don Quixote recently and it's full of stupid errors (just like Kalmus used to be) and it was a pain in the neck. We, I'm proud to say, play the low Eb in Heldenleben here in Minneapolis. I'm with you, Jerry. I was really diapponted the very first time I heard the old Reiner CSO Heldenleben and heard the low brass take the Eb. But the Mahler? Eh, not as big a deal as it adds little to that section. ML |

| Why does it always has to end with some kind of racial comments. Vulgano's post wasn't really tastefull I agree with that but is this the only way you can answer? Please think before you write as you may offend more than one person. Rimshot Posted: Fri Apr 28, 2006 11:57 am Post subject: Hey Vulgano, are you trying to take over the forums here? Aren't you Europeans supposed to take 9 or 10 weeks vacation ... please. |

| Racial comments? I'm lost, Swissdude... or you were just being funny and I missed it (sorry if that's the case!)? Jerry... please don't call people "chumps" (at least, in my forum), even if that's just your way and you don't mean to insult anyone. It IS a putdown when you call someone that. Thanks, ML |

![]() | Point taken, thank you, sorry. If I seem to offend any race it is the human one: am still tryng to place hairy-legged violisits and first trumpeters who think low notes aren't important. |
