Mahler 5 Question

Hello all, I was studying this excerpt and I've noticed that the written low F after the intro is never mentioned or talked about. Phil Smith doesn't play it in his excerpts CD and it's kind of hard to hear in a recording, so is this a note that will come up in an audition? I can't honestly say I've heard anyone play it, but I'm just curious, thanks a lot!

Manny Laureano has a spectacular aura about
MB,

Very simply, Mahler revised the 5th along with many of his symphonies and the Peters edition is the one that gets the most play among professional orchestras. That edition doesn't include the low note. It's been removed.

I've had to play that note TWICE in audition situations. On each of those
occasions, I opted to play the opening movement on a Bb. It's a great
when it just rings out of the horn.

So for knowing if you should play it or not, should you simply call them up and ask what edition they are using?

It's a rental, so, odds are, they will send it to you.

In the meantime, prepare for the worst and hope for the best...be ready to play it if asked. It never hurts to have reserve, and having that low F in your vocabulary really changes things on the low end of the horn; it's like a kid being able to ride his/her bike around the block by him/herself for the first time.

Yeah, Kevin is right. Also, many orchestras will mark the part regardless of what edition they are using and make it clear whether they want that note played or not.

The opening? Like 25 measures or so.
