Mahler 7/excitement

Manny/trumpetmaster

I wanted to briefly share you with an amazing experience we had tonight with the HKPO with Edo de Waart and Mahler 7. What a piece that is! I was totally stunned by the adrenaline rush. It was amazing, the contrast ,between rehearsals and concerts. In rehearsals you feel invinceable, sudddenly in concert you have to control your mind and not think to much, though I tried your smile thing and it did hugely help. I am also very fortunate that we have a great section, and in particular an awesome 2nd second trumpet, Dougie Waterston, one of the best, monster low range, huge high range and will follow better you, than you can follow yourself ha-ha. This is the most I have ever appreciated my section. The biggest thing I would say I drew from the experience, was how to relax myself and have faith in my ability. The first few solos's felt as if someone else was playing the instrument for me, and they were going fine, so I told myself to relax, enjoy the music, and gradualy my heart rate came to a normal rate. The 1st movement was made a lot easier by thinking of Star Trek for some of the intervals ha-ha. It was my first time playing this piece and I can honestly say its the hardest I've played so far, huge experience, loved every minute, have to do all again in 24hrs, and all I can say is I sould never know it too well!

I'd love to hear stories/comparisons of experience with this piece or anything similar.

Best Wishes, and happy Chinese New Year

Jon

Re: Mahler 7/excitement

Doesn't matter how well you get to know it, it'll always stay interesting. It's great to hear how much you enjoyed that. We took that to Carnegie with Edo one year. I had a ball. I've played it a few times since then and it's always fun, you can look forward to that.

There are so many wonderful licks in that puppy. The nice thing is that there's PLENTY to listen to and enjoy when you're resting. Not a dull moment.

Please give Edo my best and tell him I have great recollections of playing that with him. Also... if you want to see him open his eyes wide and give you a funny look, next time you have a great performance with him, go up to him afterwards and say "Man, that was seriously downtown!"

It's an old joke between him and me. He'll get a kick out of it.

(Don't worry, I'm not setting you up!)

Re: Mahler 7/excitement

Congrats Jon! Sounds like an absolutely wonderful experience that you will cherish. I love it when stuff like that happens!

I had a heavenly two and a half weeks years ago when I played six sold out shows of Porgy and Bess and immediately went into Mahler 2 the following week. I was floating for weeks after. It still brings a big smile to my face.

Wow,what responses, this truley is a trumpeters piece.
I love hearing these stories, I'll wait for the right moment (when he's in a good mood haha) but will let you know when I've told him the downtown comment ha-ha, I've had a few glasses of wine, but that has made laugh. In fairness he's been great lately, and I certainly apprecited him bringing me in tonight! Great to hear from hear from you too Alex, that sounds like a serious roast up!

Re: Mahler 7/excitement

I was able to attend a Colorado Music Festival performance of Mahler #7 a few years ago. My wife, her sister and husband attended as well (non trumpet players).

Was so excited to hear it live! No intermission! Continuous intensity! When it was finally over I was saying "Play it again!!!"

My wife now refers to it as Mahler's "Butt fatigue Symphony".

Oh well.....
