![]() | Capriccio Espagnol is always fun to play -- some trumpet fanfares and features, lots of nice chordal stuff (a la guitarra, as one might say). And the Messiah is fun to play and sing -- the whole oratorio is beautiful. Not sure what other people use, but I think I played it on D trumpet (I was on 2nd). Have fun playing -- sounds like you will. Liz

If you are asked to play everything on C, by all means do it on a C. For my situation, I played the Messiah on D because (1) it was easier to play (so I thought -- key-wise it was, but intonation-wise it required some work) and (2) I felt the sound of the D fit better for the music (in my ears and the principal trumpet's ears). There are some people I know who use picc to play the 2nd part, so it really depends on your situation and your comfort/mastery level with the horn you choose to use. I know there are arguments (mostly against) regarding usage of D/Eb trumpets in professional orchestras, but for gigs and some school stuff, I use whatever helps me to get the job done. And if you work at getting a big sound on any trumpet, no matter how small (even picc), that's what matters the most. Have a great semester, and do keep us posted on your progress in school and playing. Liz

| New Friend | Playing 2nd on the Messiah on D trumpet is a smart idea. Playing 2nd on C is possible, but will be hard to blend with the 1st player, who will normally play the entire thing on picc. I've played the 1st part on D before and it does get a bit taxing. It is phenomenally easier on picc. |
