New Husa Trumpet CD

Hi all, last night I saw my former teacher, John Daniel, give a recital, and picked up a copy of a brand new CD out through Syracuse University. It features three works by Karel Husa for trumpet(s). I've really only given a close listen to the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra (on which John Daniel plays, beautifully and magnificently), and it's really a stunning piece of music in its urgency and construction, and the powerful voice the trumpet receives. This work was written for Herseth and the CSO in '87. This particular performance is wonderful down to the engineering, and has a very spiritual quality to it.

The Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Orchestra features Rob Parton--there's never a bad excuse to hear Rob Parton, and the bit I've listened to is wonderful. He's an absolutely fearless player! Lastly, there is a set of intradas and preludes... for flugel, Bb trumpet, piccolo trumpet in Bb, piccolo trumpet in A, c trumpet, Eb trumpet, and percussion. That's a fearsome alignment to attempt, but the group (students, I think) is quite bravely up to the task.

For that matter, the Syracuse University orchestra and wind ensemble play their tail off with real maturity, depth, and power. Find this disc!

We had Karel Husa here at CCM a month or so ago for his 85th birthday concert. It was a very challenging program. What struck me as interesting was that he said (in his 85-year-old Czech voice),"I know I write very challenging music, but I don't understand. All my life I've tried to write simple music."

The concerto for trumpet and orchestra has received little attention for some reason. I heard an old cassette tape of Herseth playing it and I recall liking it quite a bit.
