| New York Philharmonic Performance Live from North Korea From the PBS' Great Performances website: THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC LIVE FROM NORTH KOREA THE CONCERT WILL BE STREAMED LIVE ON FEBRUARY 26 at 4 AM (EST). The New York Philharmonic's upcoming historic concert in North Korea's capital city Pyongyang premieres via satellite, with Music Director Lorin Maazel leading the orchestra in Dvorák's "Symphony No. 9"("From the New World"); Gershwin's "An American in Paris," and Wagner's Prelude to Act III of "Lohengrin." Opening with the national anthems of North Korea and the United States, the program will be transmitted from the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre, with behind-the-scenes coverage by Bob Woodruff of ABC News. The network has had rare access inside the closed society of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, where contact with the outside world is completely forbidden to citizens. The Philharmonic visit marks the first by American artists there. "I have always felt that music is a powerful language," says Maestro Maazel, "in which those of us who are humane and intelligent can speak to each other, in defiance of political and cultural boundaries." The concert is the centerpiece of a 48-hour visit to Pyongyang by the Philharmonic. The program will be broadcast on PBS on Thursday, February 28, 2008 (check local listings). |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: New York Philharmonic Performance Live from North Korea This is history in the making! Proof that MUSIC is the universal language. I compare this to the Berlin Phil Concert when the iron curtain fell. I was in (South)Korea on a concert tour last year. The yearning in the south for the separation to end is so strong. Even the tour of the DMZ highlighted the wish for reunification. Each event brings it closer! Phils trumpet playing could just be more powerful than North Koreas atomic weapons program......... |

| Re: New York Philharmonic Performance Live from North Korea I really hope this is the start of more dialogue for both sides. History in the making! |

| Re: New York Philharmonic Performance Live from North Korea I heard they invited Eric Clapton to do a Concert. He agreed and said some time in 2009. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: New York Philharmonic Performance Live from North Korea Only a policy of small steps can bridge the differences here. Anyone who has visited the area or served in the military at the DMZ knows that generations of hate and distrust cannot be dispelled overnight, or with a bomb. Korea was overrun by the Chinese and Japanese and Americans also took sides. The suffering of the North has a lot to do with the infrastructure being run down and no support from the outside world (including China). The present government has not been exactly successful in getting aid commitments........... The arts are a great non-political way to find a common denominator. |
