![]() | If you want to be an orchestral trumpet player NU is now the best, and maybe the most expensive place to learn how to do it. Argue with me if you like but the kids from that school keep winning. How do they do it?

![]() | Re: The Northwestern Trumpet Factory Well, I guess that pretty much knocks me out of having a chance to go there for my DMA. Sad days. :(

| Pianissimo User | Re: The Northwestern Trumpet Factory Its 90% the students winning those jobs. Any teacher that take credit for their students success is just wrong. These players are some of the best players in the country when they get there and its that work ethic that gets them jobs, not the name in the education section of their resumes. Congrats to all these players winning jobs because your hard work is really paying off and now you can pay off those loans from all that tuition...

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: The Northwestern Trumpet Factory As in most debates - the truth is somewhere in the middle. No one can discount the tremendous success of Butler and Geyer as teachers - the list is simply too long. Add their own great playing abilities, their attachment to a long, honored tradition, a great location, and a prevailing mindset of "making it" and you have a recipe for a great place to go to school. Talented students are just that. They are the ones who learn the most from great teaching. |

![]() ![]() | Re: The Northwestern Trumpet Factory Yes, it is the teachers. The students apply to get in. If it were the student alone they could go anywhere and be successful. We need a double blind study on this. Any volunteers? You might want to look at what universities send the most students to NU. You might find a common thread in the undergraduate teachers. You might call it a pyramid of proficiency. I think we can look at Eastman and the New England Conservatory and see similar results.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: The Northwestern Trumpet Factory Littlebirdy, what are you looking for? The golden key? If such a thing existed, I guarantee tuition at NU would be far more expensive than it is currently! There's no substitute for 2-4 years in an environment where the standards are world-class. Schools are, generally, a breeding ground for mediocrity. NU is one of the few places that's superceded this standard. Are they the only one? No. For Bensdorf, Muckey, Tiscione, Martin, Fensom, Larsen, et.al. - I'm pretty sure that standard took hold way before Charlie and Barbara got ahold of them! That said, something is clearly working well at that school! Bravo to Geyer and Butler! Last edited by robertwhite; 12-18-2007 at 12:30 AM. |

![]() | Re: The Northwestern Trumpet Factory This thread smells of someone who wants something. Northwestern is no new player. They have been great for many years, but so are many other schools. Rather than trying to state that one school is better than all the rest, it would be better to give a school a pat on the back and then give credit to all the other schools that also work hard to produce great players and teachers.

![]() | Re: The Northwestern Trumpet Factory What do you think I want? We can pat people on the back all we want. I'm just saying Northwestern is the best at what they do right now. And that is my opinion. Quote:
