I don't understand the Charlier. It says to play it on C and don't transpose.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

Probably means to play it on C trumpet as if it were written for C trumpet. In other words, just play what you see, forget that it was written for Bb.

What don't you understand about "play it on C and don't transpose"? They want you to play it on C trumpet as written.

rubberduckie thanks for the info . How do you like your job so far?

My book is old and maybe it has been re-done but in mine, it's written for B flat trumpet.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

You are going to need to buy the newer C trumpet version. It came out in the mid 90s I think.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

I'm sorry that was a joke.

Joe

1. Take your good old Charlier book and put it on the stand.

2. Pick up your C trumpet. (double check you picked up the C and not Bb)

3. Play Charlier #2 on your C trumpet

4. Do not transpose. Play what you see written on the page on C trumpet.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

I'm glad to see that the Phil is accepting tapes. A lot of the smaller orchestras don't. Many decide who to invite solely on the basis of resumes. I was rejected by the Toledo Symphony because my resume didn't include enough professional experience. I like to think that if they had a blind tape round, I would have at least had a shot. It's funny that mid-level orchestras hold out for the best resume while the New York Phil holds out for the best musician...

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

Sorry to hijack this thread for a minute but it sounds like you got fed a line from Toledo. I know a player from the area who was at the audition and several local college students were given the chance to play. Who knows how much "professional experience" they had.

Re: NY Philharmonic Audition

Not everyone in Toledo wanted the best musician. Some just wanted a third trumpet.
