| Pianissimo User | Orchestra Auditions I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question or not. I am a student, and I have never auditioned for an orchestra. Are most orchestra's similar in audition style? Typically what do they ask you to do, and what are they looking for? What have your experiences been with auditioning? Any insights into the process would be beneficial to many I think. Thanks in advance for any help. |

![]() | Re: Orchestra Auditions Most orchestral auditions are done behind a screen, so the audition committee won't be swayed by sex, national origin, and overall looks. The required excerpts will be specified in advance, sometimes a solo piece is required; there may or may not be sight-reading involved. Auditions for university or community orchestras are usually a bit more informal. You can bring in some music and say "first I'll play this, then this, then this..." and play them. This is how Adolph Herseth got his job with Chicago. Things looked for in an audition are perfect rhythm, good intonation, musicianship, sound and dynamics. It helps if there are no wrong notes. Hope this helps! |

| Pianissimo User | Re: Orchestra Auditions Definitely. I mean I didn't even know what to expect at all. This gives me at least some understanding of the process. Thanks! |
