Orchestral Duets

Is there a book somewhere with a bunch of duets (trios, whatever) lifted directly from Orchestral literature? Of all different styles from Brahms to Strauss and Mahler?

My teacher and I played a few duets out of my excerpt book at my last lesson and it was a LOT of fun (and I learned a bunch in 10 mins about playing in the back of an orchestra).

Thanks
Stuart

I think what you're asking is: is there a book that includes all parts? Yes, there are several.

The International editions (simply called Orchestral Excerpts for Trumpet; half of the volumes are edited by Voisin and half by Bartold, 10 volumes) have all parts, as does the one by Philip Norris (Top 50 Excerpts, I think it's called). There must be others, too, but those are the ones that come to my mind. There are errors in the International ones, but they do serve as a great starting off point.

Check out Henry Mancini's Symphonic Trumpet Quartets. There's everything you could wish for: Stravinsky, Wagner, Strauss (Heldenleben and Zaruthustra, amongst others), Debussy, Bach, Mendelssohn, Monteverdi.... A lot of fun, even if some of the stuff is near impossible.

Just for clarification, didn't some Mancini other than Henry arrange those quartets?

I heard zarathustra a while ago and thought it was horrible. Not the performance , but for 4 trumpets just cant really pull it off. Seems like more of a lets get drunk and play some stuff than something to perform.

haha... some of them are more practical than others. The arrangement of Heldenleben is pretty good. As is the arrangement of Firebird. I never attempted to read through Zarathustra, I think it was a little out of my league... I'm sure if you got the right people to play it, but it would take some seriously monster players to pull off.

The players were good, but for me there is no way to play things like zarathustra for any small chamber group.

I do want to buy those to play with friends, i just dont want to play them for anyone outside of a practice room.

i think you're right in that their main purpose is to just sit down and have a laugh or two while plunging through the different rep. I would say that there are a few things worthy of performance: the Bach chorale and fugue, the three pieces from mendelssohn's midsummer night's dream, and if you ever get a wedding gig for trumpet 4tet, i think there's a decent four part arrangement of the bridal chorus. but first and foremost, have fun!
