Oregon Symphony Principal Trumpet Auditions

Just passing along information -- any of you going to audition? Portland is a beautiful place to live, but not on the salary they are offering. Plan to have another job to make ends meet. Section members get about $10K less than the principal.

Even at that salary, they will get a monster. It's the way the world works. I did the last two auditions there.
They were both for second. The first one was where Richard Thornburgh won. Tim Morrison was the runner up. A little while later he got the job in Boston. Now , he's doing studio work, I think.
The second one was after Mr. Thornburgh died. Dave Bamonte got that job.
Fred Sautter is one fine trumpet player and a great man. I was lucky enough to study with him for several years, and he's a great teacher too. Believe me - they will get somebody who is a monster.

I don't think you'll need another job to make ends meet. 51g is pretty good in Oregon...or anywhere else for that matter!

Depends if you need to drop 20g on a new super horn. But yes I think I could scrape by on 51g.

51g does sound good. Especially as a starting point. Do they offer principal bonus pay?

Nice job...I'm sure they will get a top notch player.

Every principal job is over-scale. Add at least 20% to the scale figure.

wilmer, please help me out here. the section jobs say the pay is $41k. the principal jobs say the pay is $51k. you say to expect the job to pay 20% overscale. is that 20% on top of the $51K? or are they advertising the $51k as the pay including overscale, since the section jobs are shown at $41k (which would make the principal pay about 25% over)?

also, 2 of the 3 trumpets and 3 of the 5 horns are listed as "acting" musicians. whats going on out there?

Scale is the minimum amount a player will be paid. Principal players in major orchestras don't work for scale, even if there is one printed.
The acting players, I suspect, are untenured. Orchestras have different rules, it depends on the master contract.
