Re: Pakhmutova trumpet concerto

Did it for my junior year jury - 1975. Fun piece! Haven't been able to find my music for it in years.

Good luck! I think you'll enjoy it.

i played it 12 years ago. it is a fun piece. don't overplay the louds. This is not a piece you can throw together with the pianist in one rehearsal you will have to spend time getting this together.

Re: Pakhmutova trumpet concerto

Martin Berinbaum recommended this and that it was underperformed. This was back in 1974 in a promotional flier. I sought it out and finally got around to playing it on a graduate recital. I loved working on it. Energetic. Lyrical. Emotional melodies.

It is a difficult "ensemble" piece (I used the piano reduction) in that I had to be so familiar with her part in order to feel comfortable on my part.

There are a couple of good recordings on CD out.

Bibi Black and an older recording by Sergei Popov.

Somewhat different approach by each but enjoyable none the less.

I think it is being performed today than back then.

About time!

Re: Pakhmutova trumpet concerto

What kind of trumpet is this written for? I downloaded the piano reduction and it looks funky with the keys.

Re: Pakhmutova trumpet concerto

It's written for Bb trumpet, and the keys are ok, I'm finding the third page to be quite hard to polish up though.

It's very fun, almost Beethoven-esque in terms of the opening and the real lyrical parts. A great piece to show off your musicianship as well as technique.

It's easily one of my favorite concertos, and I'm so thankful that Pakhmutova put recordings of it on her website, since it's near impossible to find a recording of it, which is a real shame.

Re: Pakhmutova trumpet concerto

Its originally written for Trumpet and Orchestra, but typically done with the piano reduction. The piece is great! It is a great Arutunian counterpart.

I worked up and performed this piece last semester, I loved it, thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I agree with cornetguy, watch the louds. If your not careful in the opening it's easy to slip out of tune and when paired with piano some parts can be pretty tricky. Great piece though

Re: Pakhmutova trumpet concerto

I'm doing this one and Caprice by Bozza on C for a recital in April. Also considering doing a piece with my quintet...considering an Ewald, any suggestions?
