Picking a solo

Hi everybody,

Now that its summer ive decided to really step up my playing. Ive been playing out of Arbans alot and i think i want to start working up a solo for next year to spice up my practicing.
Do any of you have any suggestions for cool solos off the beaten path. It seems like all the people in my section are doing the Haydn movements 1 or 3. Im looking for something that people arent used to hearing.
-Sam

Re: Picking a solo

Sam,
I don't really know what level you are.(I'm going by Ny state levels here)

level 5.

Gaelic Suite is good, very nice contrast in the movements, expressive
Maid of the mist Polka: If you're into the arbans stuff, then this technical piece is great, lots of double-tonguing, etc.

Level 6
Hindemith, Haydn, Goedicke.
Best off checking w/ a teacher or try and get a lesson if you don't regulary have them

Keep up w/ the arbans, that is the backbone of most of our chops!

Good Luck

Re: Picking a solo

The reason that we all played the Haydn is that everyone knows it--less chance of faking through. Brass Crusader's suggestions are real good though, not everyone knows them, but everyone "in the know" does.

Have fun!

Re: Picking a solo

Other good tunes are: Halsey Stevens Sonata,Kent Kennan Sonata, Aria Con Variazioni -Fitzgerald, Prelude and
Ballade-Balay, the solos in Wynton's Carnival album (Carl Fischer, I believe). By all means, keep to that Arban book. Don't forget etude books though. Small, Brandt, Top Tones, Hering, Sachse, Charlier, etc.

Re: Picking a solo

Check out the solos in the back of Herbert L. Clarke's Characteristic Studies. My favorites are From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific and Neptune's Court.

Yes, the solos in Herbert L. Clarke's Characteristic Studies are great. My favorites are Maid of the Mist, Bride of the Waves and From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific.

Here are more suggestions:

1. Kent Kennan "Trumpet Sonata" (Play the third movement if your looking for a real challenge)
2. Artuian(spelling?) "Trumpet Concerto"
3. Goedicke "Concert Etude"

Best of luck to you.

-Tom.

Re: Picking a solo

Ooooh. The Goedicke is very fun to play I think atleast. Not hte best peice, but a fun peice to master ne way. very easy to memorize. Good to buff up your repetoire with. It sounds complex, is challenign, but once you got it down its pie. It doenst go high really either

The arutunian on the othe rhand is pretty monster, and is very exhausing, but one of my favourite solos.

The Theo Charlier stuff is also pretty nice. I like Du Style # 2, but if you decide to go this route a teacher is reccomended, b ecause these things may nto be flashy, but htey are tediously difficult.

Re: Picking a solo

The pieces mentioned are all great high school literature, especially for students working in the Arban's method who might be ready to begin work on the Haydn. I would also recommend "Andante and Allegro" by Guy Ropartz. If you can get a hold of the 2000/2001 ITG CD "Contest Solos for Young Trumpeters" recorded by Phil Smith, I would highly recommend it. Pretty much everything on that CD would be appropriate I'm guessing.
