Re: Quite a difference?

The trumpet player on the top is sharper than the one on the bottom?!?! Or the one of the bottom is flatter than the top?!?!

Re: Quite a difference?

The second one is much prettier than the first - but, the first one looks a lot more like me. Hey, maybe I'm not too old to play after all (my wife keeps telling me that I am).

Seriously, both were very enjoyable but the conductor's style differences are apparent.

Re: Quite a difference?

I would hope that there is a difference between a player with a style created over a period of 60 years and one that has been playing only for 10 or 15.

They both do a fine job. Bud Herseth defined orchestral trumpet playing for many years. Mireia now has her chance. Let's discuss this in 20 years! I see a lot of "younger" generation players leaving orchestras to become soloists or professors.

Re: Quite a difference?

In 2nd vid, on 8:00, does the conductor tell the brass (?) section to stop, then give them the okay to play after? It almost looks like it!

Re: Quite a difference?

There is much more of a differance in conductors of the two, than trumpet players. That would be a better discussion.

Re: Quite a difference?

The CSO sound is not in synch with the video. There also seems to have been some editing at 7:17 in the piece where it sounds like a near train wreck. I would like to see the actual DVD of the performance and compare it to this youtube version.
Get the 1970 London/Decca recording of the Mahler Fifth with Solti to hear Bud and the CSO in real context. That recording was a staple in high end stereo shops for years.

It is my understanding that the Decca recordings do not represent the sound of the CSO very well.

s.coomer is on a distinguished road
Re: Quite a difference?

Seems to me that neither recording is very good in that the video does not match the sound in either one. I don't think, however, that you can compare Bud's playing then to someone rather fresh out of the gate. As Rowuk said, give her twenty years and then let's see.
