As for other Shostakovich recordings: Haitink's cycle is well-known, and both #1 and #5 are excellent performances and very well recorded too. #10 is probably the next one to get after #5, Jansons/Philadelphia, Karajan/Berlin, and Mravinsky/Leningrad are probably the front-runners here. #8 is another great symphony. I like Mravinsky/Leningrad on BBC Legends (beware; the Philips recording is pitched a half-tone flat, believe it or not), and again Haitink/Concertgebouw. The LSO Live recording got rave reviews, but, for what it's worth, is not one of my favorites. JJ | |

![]() | for the most part the rostropovich cycle is pretty hard to beat. in particular those done with the National symphony, 4,5,7,8, & 11 are exceptional and INMHO are definitive recordings of these particular works. and ofcourse it goes without saying that all brass player's owe it to themselves to own the CSO/Bernstein 1&7 recorded live in '87(Jacobs last concert with CSO). my favorite 1 is the Moscow Phil/lawrence leighton smith on sheffield labs. another overlooked offering is the 10 & 11 of the Helsinki Phil/DePriest on Delos.. very fiery performances with some fine brass playing. i definitly have to check out the lopez-cobos/cincy disc of 1 & 15!! |

![]() | Thanks, Eric, that was nice. To the kids, I'm just the guy that yells at them because I love them and the music. Wish you could hear them... they're great. There might be a clip up at the website from last year(mnyouthsymphonies.org). Now, back to Shostakovitch. I love my old recording of Vacchiano playing the 1st piano concerto with André Previn as soloist. The final fanfare was tongued tt k t T tt k t T tt k t T T T T T ...etc. That's how Vacchiano did it and taught us to do it. It's kind of fun and a different sound. ML |
