| Pianissimo User | Recommended Shostakovich Recordings I'm looking to buy some Shostakovich recordings - Shostakovich 7 and 1 in particular - does anyone have any favorites? Which works would you recommend after symphonies no. 5 and 9? Thanks for any help, Matt |

![]() | For 7, I like Masur with NY on Teldec. For 1, try Jansons with Berlin. Trumpets sound awesome, and the CD also features Ole Edvard Antonsen playing the First Piano Concerto, in one of my favorite recordings of that piece. The 11th Symphony also has a huge trumpet part. Check out Dave Bilger's fantastic recording with Philly conducted by Jansons on EMI. Yes there are so many great recordings of the 5th. Trumpet-wise, my favorites are the new LSO Live recording conducted by Rostropovich, and, believe it or not, my boss, Enrique Batiz, conducting the Royal Phil on ASV. That LSO Live CD features Maurice Murphy sounding absolutely phenominal. Exactly how I've always wanted to hear that piece played. Another favorite Shostakovich CD is called "The Dance Album" on Decca and features various ballet, film, and operetta music by DS. Riccardo Chailly conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra, and again Dave Bilger sounds amazing. Lots of nice trumpet stuff on that CD, which was recorded the same month Dave recorded the Brandenburg with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. JU |

![]() | In addition to all of the above posts which have good recommendations I'll add a few: Shostakovich 1+7 Chicago/Bernstein. Both pieces are together on 2-discs. I would also check out his 13th Symphony, good recordings of which are Chicago/Solti and New York/Masur One recording of the 5th which I didn't see and which should be recommended is New York/Bernstein from the early 80s. The box sets offer good value for the amount of music you get, though, and should be considered. hope this helps Adam |

Contrary to popular belief, most CDs that are sold as live performances have patch sessions to fix accidents, so, this one is the real thing as far as live performances go. It's available to hear at mpr.org ML |

![]() | For those of you that like this kind of thing, there's a great DVD of Shostakovich 5 of that Bernstein concert taped in Tokyo in 1979. It features a young Phil Smith who sounds amazing, and is part of this set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...v=glance&n=130 I don't think this concert is available separately, but the box is very much worth having. It also has a Tchaik 6 featuring Gerry Schwarz, a Berlioz Requiem with the National Orchestra of France, Beethoven with Vienna, and many others. JU |

![]() | I was in a performance of 13th with the BBC Phil in February under Vasily Sinaisky, which was preceeded by the 12th (part of Bridgewater Hall's Schostakovich season). It was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and may still be online for listening at the BBC website. |
