Revueltas-Noche de Los Mayas

Has anybody played this one? Survival tips would be appreciated. I love playing loud and high as much as the next guy, but this one seems a little... excessive...

Cheers,
Jimi

Use your lead mouthpiece and muscle your way through.

Good luck, and have fun!

Keep your bell up! Do not play into the stand. Nail the important passages. The quiet moments are the times to regroup, play them beautifully. If you have an assistant, use him/her. Do not try to blow the wall down, pace yourself.
Enjoy a fun piece!

Re: Revueltas-Noche de Los Mayas

Thanks guys. It's hard not to try to do too much--I think this is the real challenge with this piece. I think I might cheat and use my big D trumpet. This one is a real blow though... Violas watch out!

We went through it today. It's a little easier on the D trumpet. One question, though... Wilmer, where are those quiet moments that I'm supposed to play beautifully? Do you mean the parts that only have one F?

Re: Revueltas-Noche de Los Mayas

Jimi-

Like all of Revueltas' music, Night of the Mayas has a challenging trumpet part. D trumpet is good for the outer movements. Whatever horn you use make sure to pace yourself to be strong on the high B's.

Make sure to get a good recording. There are several by various Mexican orchestras - I'd recommend the one by de la Fuente with the Jalapa Orchestra featuring Jim Snapp on 1st trumpet, available in this set: Amazon.com: Silvestre Revueltas: Centennial... Amazon.com: Silvestre Revueltas: Centennial...
Another favorite is the LA Phil Revuetas CD conducted by Salonen. They played Night of the Mayas here in Mexico City in 1999 just a few months before Tom Stevens retired. The audience went nuts at the end - a very exciting performance.

Revueltas' trumpet writing is extrovert and soloistic - have fun leading the band! Night of the Mayas is one of his finest scores and will certainly bring the house down!!

Re: Revueltas-Noche de Los Mayas

Hey JU,

Thanks for the post! I got the LA Phil recording and it's very powerful. The D trumpet has made life much easier for me. For me, pacing has been the most difficult part; either I'm nearly done a few bars too soon, or I finish and feel like I could have given another 10 percent. If anything, it's a learning experience--I very LOUD, POWERFUL learning experience.
